Hoop Iron for Brickwork

Hoop iron is an essential reinforcement material in South African brickwork construction. According to SANS 10400 building regulations, hoop iron must be placed at specific intervals in masonry walls to provide lateral support and prevent cracking.

Why Hoop Iron Is Used in Brickwork

Hoop iron serves as horizontal reinforcement in brick walls. It ties the masonry together, distributes loads across the wall, and helps prevent cracks from forming due to thermal expansion, settlement, or structural loading. Without proper hoop iron reinforcement, walls are vulnerable to cracking and structural failure.

SANS 10400 Requirements

South African building regulations (SANS 10400-K) specify that hoop iron must be placed:

  • Every 6th course in single-leaf walls (half-brick walls)
  • Every 4th course in cavity walls
  • At every course adjacent to openings (windows and doors)
  • At the top course of every wall
  • Below and above lintels

The standard specification calls for 30mm x 0.6mm galvanised hoop iron for residential construction.

Installation Guide

  1. Clean the course — Remove any loose mortar or debris from the brick course where hoop iron will be placed.
  2. Lay the hoop iron — Place the hoop iron strip centrally on the mortar bed, running the full length of the wall.
  3. Overlap joints — Where hoop iron strips meet, overlap by at least 150mm.
  4. Corner details — At corners, bend the hoop iron at 90 degrees and extend at least 300mm into the adjoining wall.
  5. Cover with mortar — Apply a bed of mortar over the hoop iron before laying the next course of bricks.
  6. Around openings — Run continuous hoop iron above and below all window and door openings.

Recommended Products

For standard residential brickwork, we recommend 30mm x 0.6mm galvanised hoop iron in 50m rolls. For commercial or multi-storey construction, consider the heavier 30mm x 0.8mm option for additional strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should hoop iron be placed in brickwork?

According to SANS 10400, hoop iron should be placed every 6th course in single-leaf walls and every 4th course in cavity walls. It must also be placed at the top of every wall and around all openings.

What size hoop iron is used for brickwork?

The standard size for residential brickwork in South Africa is 30mm x 0.6mm galvanised hoop iron. For commercial or structural applications, 30mm x 0.8mm is recommended.

How much should hoop iron overlap at joints?

Hoop iron strips should overlap by at least 150mm at joints. At corners, the hoop iron should bend 90 degrees and extend at least 300mm into the adjoining wall.
