Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about hoop iron for construction in South Africa.
What is hoop iron?
Hoop iron is a flat galvanised steel strip used as horizontal reinforcement in masonry construction. It is placed in the mortar bed between brick courses to provide lateral support and prevent cracking. Standard sizes in South Africa are 30mm and 40mm wide, in 0.6mm or 0.8mm thicknesses.
Why is hoop iron used in brickwork?
Hoop iron provides horizontal tensile reinforcement in brick walls. It ties masonry together, distributes loads, and prevents cracks from forming due to thermal expansion, settlement, or structural loading. It is required by SANS 10400 building regulations in South Africa.
What size hoop iron do I need?
For standard residential brickwork, use 30mm x 0.6mm galvanised hoop iron. For commercial or structural applications, use 30mm x 0.8mm. For retaining walls and wider wall sections, use 40mm x 0.6mm. Always check your engineer's specification for specific requirements.
How often should hoop iron be placed in brickwork?
According to SANS 10400: every 6th course in single-leaf walls, every 4th course in cavity walls, at the top of every wall, and around all openings (above lintels and below window sills).
Is your hoop iron SANS 10400 compliant?
Yes, all our hoop iron is hot-dip galvanised mild steel that meets the requirements of SANS 10400-K for masonry wall reinforcement.
What is the difference between hoop iron and brick force?
Hoop iron is a flat galvanised steel strip (30-40mm wide), while brick force is a welded wire mesh ladder reinforcement (65-75mm wide). Hoop iron is required by SANS 10400 at specific intervals. Brick force is supplementary reinforcement for additional crack control. They serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.

Yes, we offer trade accounts for contractors, builders, and hardware retailers with regular ordering needs. Contact us to set up a trade account with preferential pricing.
What is the price of hoop iron?
Hoop iron prices vary by size, quantity, and current steel prices. Contact us for the latest pricing. We offer competitive trade pricing and volume discounts for bulk orders.
Can hoop iron rust?
Our hoop iron is hot-dip galvanised, which provides a protective zinc coating that prevents rust. Always use galvanised hoop iron in construction — ungalvanised iron will rust and lose structural integrity.
How much should hoop iron overlap at joints?
Hoop iron strips should overlap by at least 150mm at joints, secured within the mortar bed. At corners, bend the hoop iron at 90 degrees and extend at least 300mm into the adjoining wall.
Do I need hoop iron in a boundary wall?
Yes, SANS 10400 requires hoop iron in all masonry boundary walls. The specific course interval depends on the wall height: every 6th course for walls up to 1.8m, and every 4th course for walls between 1.8m and 2.1m.
Can I use hoop iron for plastering?
Yes, galvanised hoop iron is commonly embedded in plaster as reinforcement at joints between different materials, over existing cracks, and at stress points around openings. Always use galvanised hoop iron to prevent rust staining.
What building regulations apply to hoop iron in South Africa?
SANS 10400-K (Walls) specifies the requirements for hoop iron reinforcement in masonry construction. It mandates galvanised hoop iron at specific course intervals, around openings, and at wall tops. Non-compliance can result in work stoppage orders and inability to obtain occupancy certificates.
How do I calculate how much hoop iron I need?
Measure the total length of all walls, multiply by the number of hoop iron courses needed (based on wall height and SANS 10400 requirements), and add 150mm per overlap joint plus extra for corners. Add 10% for wastage. Contact us and we'll help calculate your requirements.
Do you supply hoop iron to hardware stores?
Yes, we supply galvanised hoop iron to hardware stores and retailers at wholesale pricing. We offer trade accounts, regular delivery schedules, and competitive pricing for resellers.
What is the difference between 0.6mm and 0.8mm hoop iron?
The 0.6mm thickness is standard for residential construction and most applications. The 0.8mm thickness provides greater tensile strength and is used in commercial construction, multi-storey buildings, and structural applications where additional reinforcement is required.
